Rembetiko originated in the cosmopolitan cities of Izmir and Istanbul, at the crossroads of Turkish, Greek, Armenian, and Arab cultures. Following large-scale population movements, this music took root in Greece while retaining its roots in the traditions of the makam. Led by Angelo Martinos, a master of Greek song, Nicolas Royer-Artuso, a musician specializing in Ottoman traditions, and Aboud Chamoun, a percussionist from Aleppo, this trio takes you on a vibrant journey through some of the most beautiful pieces of this timeless repertoire.
Angelo Martinos – vocals
Nicolas Royer-Artuso – oud and violin
Aboud Chamoun – percussion
